Kiwi Berries

Have you ever tried Kiwi Berries? I saw these for the first time last autumn and decided to give them a try. They're fun; they look like little olives, but open them up and you see they are perfect miniature kiwi fruits.

The skin is smooth, unlike some of the larger varieties that have hairy skins. Anyone who likes to do a bit of pastry chef-ing might find these fun to work with. They are just a little bigger than an US nickel. You can pop them in your mouth whole, skin and all.

These particular berries were grown in Eugene, Oregon:

And here is a brave little avocado plant that sprouted on my windowsill. It's ready for potting:

Happy Saturday,

Ciao for now.

  1. Rose,

I have never seen kiwi berries before. I assume it is different variety of tiny kiwi. Is that correct?

Will avocados grow in your climate or are you making a houseplant?

  2. From what I've read they are a variety of hardy kiwi that have smooth skins, and differentiate it from the regular kiwi fruit with hairy skin. I think that a few farmers in Oregon and Washington have recently taken up growing these, so that's why they're around here. I don't know how available they are in other parts of the country.

The avocado will be a house plant.

    :)

  3. Thanks for sharing what you know about kiwi berries. I will keep an eye open for them on my next trip to the store.

I haven't grow an avocado in years. Do you know how tall the avocado plant will get as a houseplant?

  4. I don't know how tall they will get; I had one once that grew to be about 2.5 feet tall. It was really healthy, but I had to leave in in Ireland when we moved back to the states.:(

  6. I've never tried kiwi berries before, I've never seen them in the shops or the market but they look super cute. I hope your avocado plant thrives. Mine got demolished in the recent flash floods we had.
