Late Summer Love

Vegan MoFo 2015 Day 15: What's your favorite late summer food?

This is boring, but I don't want to miss another prompt, and I'll make this short and sweet, very sweet actually.

I love all the produce summer brings, but melon and blackberries hold a special place. In the Pacific Northwest, local offerings usually arrive in the market and on the vines in late summer, although they were early this year as we've had an uncharacteristically long, hot summer.

I try to freeze as many berries as I can to eat once the season passes, but the melon I just enjoy while its around, which makes it precious. I wish I had a bunch of interesting recipe ideas with melon and blackberries, but I really just eat them as they are and don't do too much else with them, other than freeze some of the berries for later.

  1. This looks really good. I didn't freeze any berries this year... just rhubarb.

What type of melon is that? I have some cubed cantaloupe in the fridge right now.

    1. I'm not sure about the melon...it seems like a honeydew hybrid.

    2. I see. It looks like a honeydew, but it's more yellowish than greenish.

  2. We founds lots of wild blackberries local to where I live last year. Our weather this summer has been so awful I've not been out walking at all :( There's still blackberries in the shops though so I should really make the most of them whilst they're around.

    1. I love wild blackberries; they're much sweeter and tastier than the cultivated ones. :)

  3. Blackberries, how can I forget. Yes, totally agree with you and the best are often those foraged.

  4. This is not boring! I always feel like I should make something with the fruits I buy, but I honestly think they taste best on their own. :)

  7. My freezer is absolutely crammed full of blackberries at the moment. I find it hard not to grab as many as I can while I can, because I know they're not coming back any time soon!

  8. I feel like a lot of summer produce is just so perfect that it doesn't need anything extra. Especially summer fruits. Sometimes I think of making a pie, but then it seems like the fruit is almost even better just on its own.
