Random Road Trips + Halloween

The first day of November has arrived, and Vegan Mofo 2010 is already well underway. I can't wait to check out what everyone will be up to and discover all sorts of new and incredible blogs and bloggers.

My theme this year will be a random road trip. The idea is to use the random geo-location generator from random.org to generate the destinations. Basically, I'll go to the random location generator and click Pick Coordinates. This will provide me with the locations for the "road trip"--provided that the location is not in the middle of the ocean or on a polar ice cap. If you play around with the locator a little, you'll probably find that about 60 - 70 % of random locations end up being precisely in one of those places. So, I'll keep clicking until I get a land location and go with it.

I am hoping this will take me to many exotic and interesting places, but I can't vouch for the authenticity of anything I come up with...I won't have a lot of time to research each destination, but I'll do my best. And, I'll probably stick around at each location for a post or two.

Last year I somehow managed to post all 31 days, but I'm feeling a little dubious that will happen this year. I think the rules technically say that there are no official rules as to how often you need to post, but should aim for at least 5 days a week, or 20 posts in the month, which is what I'm aiming for.  At any rate, 20 posts in the month will be about 4 x more than my average.

So without any further ado, the first location is:

¡Bolivia! Tune in tomorrow for some comida boliviana.

In the mean time, here are some pics from Halloween.

Lots of vegan Halloween booty, including Yummy Earth Lollipops that come in flavors like Mango, Apple Tart, and Pomegranate. Lollipops have come a long way since I was a kid:

All tolled, we got about 15 groups of Halloween revelers...not bad compared to years passed.

Here's my favorite trick-or-treater:

Spooky porch...enter if you dare:

Of course, you need some friendly pumpkins to guide the way:

And some not so friendly ones:

How's this for an attitude? -->

Here's a little visitor, who snuck in on a flower and decided to stay for dinner:

He/she munched on that flower while we had chili in pumpkins...probably the spookiest photo of all:

That's it, ciao for now.

  3. What a fantastic, fun and creative idea for a theme! This will be such fun, hope there are a lot of seats on your magic bus! :-)

Your photos are just great, love your favorite trick-or-treater too, and that very authentic costume is most impressive! I wonder if it was rented from the Broadway production of Cats? ;-)

Your other trick-or-treater's snail costume is also most authentic! Funny you should have a snail visitor on Halloween, as we had a big bumble bee! Usually Halloween brings blizzards, this year it brought a bumble bee. (Now that's spooky).

Your porch has a wickedly spooky ambience and those Jack O'Lanterns are great! I love the one with the sardonic leer best, but how can I not also love the friendly, happy ones? Or the one filled with chili? Yum!

Thanks for the fun, fun post! Can't wait to go to Bolivia tomorrow, going to go get my passport and pack a bag! Whoo-hoo, roadtrip!

  4. What a great and challenging theme! I'm sure you will be a good guide on the road trip, although I don't think I'm driving to Bolivia from here.

I love the pumpkins. I didn't carve any this year but I wish I did. I guess I still can.

  9. Hey, was that MoFo banner up there all the time? I totally missed it on my first visit! To echo Jacklyn, I love that you did that too, and think it's wonderfully clever!

  10. I love your Halloween pictures! your porch looks perfect with all those pumpkins. And I really like your MoFo theme, as well - looking forward to seeing the foods you'll come up with! :)

  11. Is that your car? Is that Cheeky at the door? That is a really attractive snail. I wonder if it's a special kind? Our local snails don't have such ornate shells. The chili looks nice and thick. Awesome post!

  14. That is such a great idea for MoFo! Can't wait to see what you come up with. Also, I just watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid last night, in which they go to Bolivia ... what a weird coincidence :)

I'm looking forward to everyone's MoFo fun too!

What are rolly pollies? They sound cute...I'm not sure whether we have them around here, but I'd like to find out! If you were carving pumpkins with a jig saw, maybe you could do a chain saw massacre theme.

    Laurie
I wish I did have a magic bus, that would be rad! LOL about Cheeky, she likes to sit on J's piano and he plays that song for her sometimes...you know the one about Moonlight, not a sound from the pavement...

You had a bumble bee visitor? That's neat...I guess the insects are starting to get the hang of the trick-or-treating thing. I've got to brush up on my vocab...which one has the sardonic leer? It's the big one isn't it.

Oh, and you caught me out...I didn't get a chance to put up that banner until yesterday evening...MoFo has me scrambling already! :)

    Jessica

Lol, driving to Bolivia would certainly be a little challenging...but my car is magic; we will be floating through the ether. :)

    Michelle

Thanks, I'm looking forward to much yumminess in the MoFo blogosphere too; I'm sure there will be no shortage. :)

We actually got more trick or treaters this year than in the last 3...there were about 14 0r 15 calls to the door...I know it's sad that it's becoming sort of extinct...when I was a kid, every house would be lit up and handing out candy, the ones with the porch light off were the exception. Now it's the opposite; there were only a handful of houses on our street lit up and participating.

    Bonnie

Thanks, looking forward to your MoFo creations too!

    Shen

Yes and yes! Cheeky was the first one at the door. That little snail was really cute; he was just a baby! I love their wobbley eye stacks.

    Mo
I'm really excited about MoFo too...so much fun, so little time!

    Jenny

I wish you guys could have trick or treated here too! I was really delighted that it was fairly easy to find some fun treats that were vegan and a little interesting too. Your guys' costumes were awesome too!

Butch Cassidy and Sundance kid went to Bolivia? Who knew? That is a coincidence!

  17. What a clever theme idea. Have fun on your travels and bring back some delicious recipes!

Your Halloween pictures are great. With so many glorious glowing pumpkin greeters, no wonder you had lots of visitors. We only had three or four groups. More than last year but a far cry from the crowds we had in Madison! I think the steps up to our house are a bit intimidating in the dark!

  18. Love the road trip theme!! I can't wait to see what great foods you come up with!
That's one cute trick-or-treater you had there. :o)
I love all the pumpkins...great pictures!

Trick or treating does seem to be a dying tradition around here...not sure why...it was in full swing when I was a kid, but that was many more years ago than I'd like to mention:P I think it's gone corporate or something....

It must be a bit disappointing for you coming from a place were it sounds like the Halloween spirit is still alive. I hope we can recapture some of that Madison spirit around here.

You must have one of those really long and steep stairways (?) They are a bit intimidating...but very common in these hilly neighborhoods.

    Michelle

MoFo is a lot of fun! I'm so glad you're participating too!

  20. Hey, Rose - during Vegan MoFo, anything is possible! So that magic bus can be yours. :-)

And yes, the big one is the one I think is sporting a sardonic leer. Could be a lopsided grin, but it looked more sardonic and leering to me. ;-)
