Night out in Miami

**Post Factum:**
This is one of a series of posts for Vegan MoFo 2010; my theme was a 'Virtual Random Road Trip', where I used random.org's random geographic location generator to select locations around the globe, I then attempted to cook a few dishes from the traditional cuisine of that place. I didn't have a lot of time between generating the locations and coming up with recipes (~ 1 day). So, lacking time to do proper research, I can't vouch for the authenticity of anything I came up with. However, they are what they are, and it was a fun theme.

If that sounds like it's from the menu of a fancy restaurant, good. Because it is...well almost. For the first night in Miami, I decided to veganize a menu item from a fancy Miami restaurant. If I were really in  Miami on a Saturday night, my plan of action would be a sumptuous dinner and a night out on the town.

The dish is from Wish, a restaurant billed as one of the top 38 (38, wtf?) restaruants in Miami according to this list:  http://miami.eater.com/archives/2010/01/11/miami-38.php. I sort of just picked one of the fancier  looking ones and ran with it.

Ad Hoc Note: I originally put a pic here of the actual dish from the restaurant website for comparison...needless to say it wasn't vegan, and I apologize if it offended anyone. Rethinking it, I have removed it. It was a gnarly thing to post for sure.

If you're interested, you can see the menu here. (I know it might be a little nerdy, but I love to look at restaurant menus online...even if I'm not going to eat there.) Not surprisingly, vegans and vegetarians would only have 1 or 2 choices.

I  kinda wish I was really there:

What to do after dinner? Why this, of course:

Note: After you click on the video, feel free to scroll up and down in this post< SCROLL TO THE BEAT> Trust Me,  for a mutli-media (truly, di-media) Miami-experience-effect (registered trademark goes here). Turn the volume UP, for the full experience.

A real list of things going on Miami tonight. Not sure whether it's a good thing or not, but Dana Carvey is there.

I'm off to par-tay a little (for real)...back tomorrow with the pan seared hearts of palm recipe.

  1. I've never been to Miami, but I'd like to go sometime! I love to look at menus online, too!!! My sister Cary and I both do. We'll go as far as guessing what each other would order. She just did a blog post about all of the foods she's looking forward to eating on her upcoming trip to Asheville. So I don't know if it's a veg thing or if "regular" :) people do it, too.

  2. Rose, your photos are increasingly awesome. No klew as to what the mystery spirals are. My guess: Pasta tinted with saffron or something similar. Just like a hi-end restaurant to serve a tablespoon of pasta as a garnish. Hearts of palm, eh? Looks wonderful!

  4. What a yummy-looking meal you put together! So much more appetizing than the one containing "unmentionables." :-) I have no idea what that garnish could be, but it looks like pasta to me, too.

I have ALWAYS loved Gloria's "Conga" song! If that doesn't put you in a partying mood, nothing will! (And I really jacked the volume, because you are so right, that's the only way to listen to that music!) :-)

  5. In my efforts to stay away from the computer over the weekend (obviously not entirely successful) I must have missed this post. Your dinner could appear on the Wish Web page and no one would know it wasn't the grisly real thing!

I wish I had a sister to do fun things like that with. I got stuck with brothers only. Do you link to your sis's site from your blog? I'll have to check it out.

I thought they looked like pasta too. It would be a typical impractical ploy at a fancy shcmancy place. A tablespoon of pasta has to be one of the most useless things ever! :)

My party animal days are mostly in the past...but sometimes the beast comes out again.

I think you guys are right about it being pasta...I took the pic down, because it was really sort of bum out thing on a vegan blog...plus the MoFo HQ issued an alert about deleting people from the MoFo if they posted about non-vegan food...yipes! I may get de-MoFo'ed.

At any rate...the vid is fun. Thank goodness the styles from the late 80's are a thing of the past though!

Time away from the computer sounds very nice at this stage...I tried that in Sept., but found that the blogs were sort of an addiction...at any rate, thanks for all your comments. We should get together sometime for coffee if you're up for it. I'll shoot you an email soon.
